How to join Switch edu-ID ...

To operate services in the Switch edu-ID federation, your organization is either part of the Switch Community, can join as Switch edu-ID Federation Partner or use the InAcademia service to identify users.

Organization in the Switch Community

Organizations part of the Switch Community can operate an Identity Provider (IdP) to serve as Home Organization and also operate edu-ID-enabled services (SAML Service Providers or OpenID Connect Relying Parties).

However, the Switch Community is restricted to certain types of organizations within or closely related to the Swiss Higher Education community.

Switch edu-ID Federation Partner

If your organization is not part of the Switch Community, it can join Switch edu-ID by signing the Switch edu-ID Federation Partner Agreement provided a single member of the Switch Community supports the acceptance of your organization as Federation Partner.

Typically, a Federation Partner operates edu-ID-enabled web resources (SAML Service Providers, OpenID Connect Relying Party) and makes them available for the users with an edu-ID-enabled account at one of the participating Home Organizations.

InAcademia Student Validation Service

If your organization is neither part of the Switch Community, nor can it become a Federation Partner, a service still can identify users from the higher education community in Switzerland and worldwide via the InAcademia service. This service allows validating academic users in a simple, secure and privacy preserving way in real-time. The InAcademia service is operated by the GÉANT Association, which is closely related with Switch and other European research and education networks.

Not a member of an edu-ID-enabled Home Organization?

You still can create an edu-ID account to access some services like the library service Swisscovery.
