Description

Research project as the origin

Each day, the webcam on the Jungfraujoch sends some six gigabytes of image data to the SWITCH server in Zurich. This exceptionally high amount of data for a remote area is only possible by virtue of the fibre optic line to the high-altitude Alpine research station. SWITCH connected up this station to the Swiss education and research network in March 2010 in order to permit real-time data transmission. The 1-gigabit per second broadband connection allows researchers to control the measurement systems directly, from any location. And now, the connection also ensures that the image data from the webcam can be called up live on this website.

Location

The webcam ist located on the Sphinx (Jungfraujoch), 3571 meters (11716 feet) above sea level.
