This page is being updated. Switch Drive recently moved from ownCloud to Nextcloud, and we are revising this documentation to reflect the changes. Some information may be outdated or incomplete in the meantime.
For Administrators and Integrations
This works only if your Moodle administrator has set up the connection. If you don't see Switch Drive in Moodle, ask your Moodle help desk.
- In Moodle, open the File picker. Choose Switch Drive on the left.
- Sign in to your Switch Drive account.
- Select the file you want to use.
- Choose how Moodle should use it:
- Make a copy of the file. Moodle gets its own copy. Later changes in Switch Drive are not passed on.
- Create an alias / shortcut to the file. The file stays in Switch Drive. When you change it, Moodle shows the new version.
- Create an access controlled link to the file. Useful when students hand in work. Once handed in, the file is locked until you release it.
- Click Select this file.
Preparation
- Find your Moodle's OAuth2 callback URL. It looks like
https://yourmoodle/admin/oauth2callback.php. - Email drive-support@switch.ch and say you want to connect Moodle to Switch Drive. Attach the callback URL.
- Switch creates a client ID and a secret key and sends them to you in a file.
Configuration in Moodle
- Open the ownCloud repository plugin and set it to Enabled and visible. The plugin also works with Nextcloud.
- Go to Site administration > Server > OAuth2 services and click Create a new custom service.
- Choose a name. Users don't see it.
- Enter the client ID and the secret key from Switch. Switch on Authenticate token requests via HTTP headers.
- Set the service base URL to
https://drive.switch.ch/. - Save.
- Back in the repository settings, click Create a repository instance.
- Choose a name that users will see. Select the service you just created in the Issuer list.
- Open the configuration (gear icon) and enter the mappings. Then open the user configuration and check the settings. [Mappings and settings: copy from the original page, they are shown as screenshots there.]
- Test the connection in a Moodle course.
A voucher is a secret, one-time link. Whoever opens it can create a full Switch Drive account with their own storage. It is linked to you as the creator and to the person who activates it.
Why use one? Your external project partners then don't need public links. They can use the Sync Client, so project files stay automatically up to date, without error-prone manual uploads and downloads.
How do I get one? Ask your institution's administrator. See whether your institution allows vouchers and how to request them. You can also ask for a voucher to be deleted when your partner no longer needs access.
After activation: your partner appears in the Switch Drive address book. To share, type their name in the sharing box and choose the entry with (eduid) behind the name.
Welcome to Switch Drive! Follow these steps:
- Create a Switch edu-ID if you don't have one yet: https://eduid.ch/web/registration. You most likely don't have an AAI account, so choose manual registration. Forgot your password? Use https://eduid.ch/web/reset-password.
- Remember your email address and password. You need them to sign in. You can add more email addresses and use any of them to sign in. Your primary email address receives notifications from Switch Drive.
- Open the voucher link. Accept the terms and conditions, then click Register for Switch Drive.
- Sign in at https://drive.switch.ch, or click Go to Switch Drive.
More details: How to register Switch Drive.
Project Folders come with their own storage, so you have to apply at your institution. You may be asked for the planned size, the purpose of the project and a list of project members.
Contact your local Switch Drive administrator. How to proceed.
