This page is being updated. Switch Drive recently moved from ownCloud to Nextcloud, and we are revising this documentation to reflect the changes. Some information may be outdated or incomplete in the meantime.
Deleted Files, Versions and Storage
Usually yes. Deleted files move to Deleted files (the trash bin), where they stay for 90 days. After that they are gone for good.
- Sign in in the browser.
- Click Deleted files in the lower left corner.
- Select the file or folder, or several, and click Restore.
A restored file goes back to its original folder. If that folder no longer exists, it goes to the top level of your switchdrive folder, and you can move it from there.
Files that were deleted by someone else: people you share with can only delete if you allowed it. If somebody deleted your shared data, it is in your trash and in the trash of the person who deleted it. If you can't find a file, open Activity to see who deleted it, and ask them to restore it.
- In the browser, click Deleted files in the lower left corner.
- Select the file or folder.
- Click the trash bin icon.
Be careful: permanently deleted files can't be restored.
Yes. Switch Drive saves a version each time you save a file. Older versions are removed automatically after a while.
- In the browser, find the file and click the three dots next to its name.
- Open Details and then Versions.
- Hover over a version to see its exact date and time.
- Click Download, or Restore to bring it back. Your current version stays in the list, so you can undo a wrong restore.
Need to keep a version for longer? Save a copy with your own version number, for example Minutes-v1.docx, Minutes-v2.docx.
The standard is 100 GB. Your institution can give you more: information for administrators.
Only your own files count. These do not count: files shared with you, deleted files in the trash, and older versions.
To check your usage, open your personal settings in the browser. A bar shows how much is used.
Switch makes backups to restore the whole system after a disaster. We cannot restore single files on request. You are responsible for your own backups.
You do have a safety net: deleted files go to your trash and can be restored for 14 days. After that they are gone for good. To restore: sign in on the web, open Deleted files, select the file and click Restore.
Switch Drive protects data on its way to and from your device (encrypted connection, HTTPS). Files stored on the servers are not encrypted by Switch Drive.
For sensitive files, encrypt them yourself before uploading: use your operating system's encryption, a password-protected ZIP or PDF, or a dedicated encryption tool.
Open Activity in the browser. It shows who shared, created, changed, deleted or commented on files, up to the last 10 days. Use the filters on the left to show only certain activities, or only your favourite folders or the activity of other people.
